Go to "improve the answer" below to see a diagram. As you stand in front of the vehicle, assume the fire-wall is at 12:00 o'clock.
On a HEI: #1 plug wire should be at 4 o-clock position. At 12 o-clock; the # 5 cylinder wire is located there. Cylinder wire #8 is attached at the 6 o'clock position. #3 cylinder wire is attached at the 9 0'clock position. use the diagram from "improve the answer" to fill in the remaining wires. The firing order is 18436572
From the front of the engine, the #1 cylinder is located to your immediate right. Cylinders 3, 5 and then 7 follows on the right bank. Cylinder # 2 is to your immediate left is followed by 4, 6 and #8 at the back of the block, near the fire-wall.
