If it is a 1/2 ton then it will be the 4L60E. The 3/4 tons used the 4L80E in them.
The only transmission that will work in that 96 model is a 1996 model transmission.
There is a sticker somewhere under the hood that will have the engine size written on it.

Raise the hood find the heater motor tap it with a hammer. It should run.
Hook that Silverado to a 5th wheel cattle trailer. Find a nice, seculed spot near a pasture, and be responsible. that's what the bed is for!
