OK, I asked and answered. I just really want to help all the Macs out there. Now this is Word for Mac and not TextEdit.

For Macs

  1. Click on Word next to the Apple Logo in the upper left-hand corner and click Preferences.
  2. Next click on the the Spelling and Grammar category.
  3. Look down at the grammar section and go on to the last check box in that section. Check the on that says "Show readability statistics"
  4. Click "Ok".
  5. Now Spell Check your document. Go to tools and it's the 1st in the menu.
  6. Correct or ignore any spelling and grammars it comes across.
  7. A box will show up saying "Word finished checking the selection. Do you want to continue checking the remainder of the selection?".
  8. Click "Yes".
  9. A box will show up called "Readability Statistics".
  10. Look down at the last thing in the Readability section. Look for the "Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level". This gives you the grade level your writing is at. If your in 9th grade you should have a number near 9 or above.

This came from personal experience.

For Windows

  1. Go to the cool symbol in the upper left-hand corner.
  2. Click "Word Options".
  3. Click "Proofing".
  4. Check the "Show readability statistics"
  5. Spell Check your document.

This came from personal experience.

*Tip: To increase your grade level of writing, use bigger, more complex vocabulary, make sure there are no spelling or grammatical errors, and refrain from choppy sentences for style. The computer can't detect the level of depth your paper is written at. It is mostly based on spelling, grammar, vocabulary, the number of characters per word, etc.
