check that switch it's probably defective or for some reason its staying "open" it may simply be faulty wiring.

You put the key in the ignition and turn it clockwise
It could be that it needs a new ignition switch. As they wear, they loose contact inside. it is a fairly easy replacement and not very expensive.

Switch the ignition without starting the car to "drive-mode" (number 2) and hold down the trip-button for a few seconds, turn of the ignition and wait for a few seconds and it will be gone.
