You must diagnose and fix the problem. A 1992 is equipped with OBD1 diagnostics, so the light wouldn't be on if the computer wasn't seeing a problem.
No, The bell housing is different on the 92. You need a 1996 or 1997 4L60E 4x4 transmission.
