With violins, the highest string is E. And then fourth finger would put you up to B. But then you can shift, so there is no real highest note. You might get to a point by shifting to where you can't hear it anymore, but it is still a note. Although you could probably play two more octaves on it by shifting, notes that can still be heard.

A story was published in the Houston Chronicle in 2001 about the great violinist Itzhak Perlman breaking a string early in his concert at Avery Fisher Hall in NYC. Instead of replacing the string or instrument, the article states that he collected himself and then played a masterful version of the piece (which was not identified) on three strings. At the end he is supposed to have said, "You know, sometimes it is the artist's task to find out how much music you can still make with what you have left." It is a moving story, but no one has been able to confirm it. The website snopes.com calls it False and cites evidence to support that claim. Nevertheless, the story has been repeated in various places; there was even a book written called The Broken String, using the story as its basis. Perlman himself has never confirmed that the event happened.
