If you know that it still has battery, try holding down the power switch for about 15-20 seconds to let it reset, and then be patient. Let it be for a while, and it should reboot and no longer be frozen.

You, can't fix it. It must be replaced. Repair companies will charge 60-80 ukp to replace the screen which may not be economic for a device which originally cost £110.
You can get the Amazon Kindle screen fixed by third party services (google Kindle Repair) or you can try to fix it yourself using a free repair guide repair guide http://www.portatronics.com/guide. I think they should make those ebook readers more sturdy, since they're intended lugged around and prone to be in bags with other stuff or exposed to water.
