If its called a grass handler and has a number system on right rear fender and foward and reverse in center in front of the seat, the chances are you need a new drive belt. If your not mechanically inclined you have a nightmare. If your good at repairs it will take you about 2 hours and about 35 bucks for a new belt. You can match the belt number or go to the manufacturer MTD on line with make and model numbers for parts. MIne is a 12 hp. vertical shaft, ugly and you can't kill it.
The smell comes from the new clutch and usually because you are riding it, or slipping it. Being a new clutch it reacts to almost any pressure. Stop riding or slipping it and this will stop.
This helps to prevent your foot from slipping through the stirrup.
When your tires rub against the surface you are riding on to slow you down. When your but is rubbing against your seat to stop you from slipping off. When your hands rub against your handlebars to stop them from slipping off.
transmission or transaxle
An indication of overheating of some sort. Could be caused by a number of things. Clutch slipping, whether from normal wear and tear or from driver riding the clutch. Also, could be caused by the transmission being tasked beyond it's limits, like towing or carrying a load heavier than the vehicle is rated for.
Could be broken trans mount or engine mounts. Not sure what is meant by riding rough.
It could be that the pulleys may be loose or the belt could be wet or slipping. Or the switch may be bad.
A manual trans can't slip, but manual trans are coupled to clutches that can. IF it wouldn't disengage, then it might be fixed by adjusting the stroke of the clutch, but if it's slipping it's usually either worn(possible with a 2005 model), or it's become glazed if you've been riding the clutch. If that's the case, replacement is the only cure. Can be fairly expensive, as modern cars require a lot of disassembly to get to the clutch.
If you are driving it correctly, not slipping the clutch or riding it, the clutch will last for 100,000 miles or more. Slipping means you are not allowing the clutch to fully engage smoothly. In other words revving the engine and trying to ease the clutch on. Practice will cure this. Riding it means keeping your foot on the clutch pedall all the time so that it slips even at speed.
