Determine where leak originates and replace appropriate seal or gasket
The 5 speed is known to leak from the 3 rubber plugs at the back end of the shifter rails just behind the shift lever.
Drill an eighth inch hole through each plug and put a No. 8 machine screw through it with nut and washers and put it back in the hole and tightened the nut till the plug feels solid.
I did this through the hole in the floor by removing the shift lever and boot. The shifter is removed by removing the nut from the tapered lock bolt and threading it to the other end and tightening till it is pulled out.
For a 1992 Ford Ranger , 2.3 liter four cylinder : The 5 speed manual transmission takes ( 2.8 U.S. quarts of MERCON automatic transmission fluid )
There isn't a drain plug , you have to drop the transmission pan
Should be a plug at the side of transmission - fill to this level
On a 1992 Ford Ranger : It depends on which 5 speed manual transmission you have : The Mitsubishi transmission , code " D " ( takes 4.8 pints of 80-90W gear lube ) The Mazda transmission , code " M " ( takes 5.6 pints of MERCON automatic transmission fluid )
It is important to have the right fluid in a car to help it run smoothly. For a 1992 Ford Ranger with a Manual Transmission the best gear oil is Mercon V.
For a 1992 Ford Ranger , 5 speed manual transmission : ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you have the Mitsubishi made transmission ( transmission code " D " ) It takes 2.4 U.S. quarts of 80-90 W gear lube ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ If you have the Mazda made transmission ( transmission code " M " ) It takes 2.8 U.S. quarts of MERCON automatic transmission fluid
The 1992 2.3L 5 Speed required Mercon Automatic Transmission Fluid. That's right, you need to put ATF in the manual transmission.
Your 1992 Toyota transmission will hold 12 quarts of transmission fluid, when it is empty. You can check the transmission fluid level with the dipstick.
The 1992 5-Speed DOES NOT have a dipstick. You have to remove a threaded plug on the drivers' side of the transmission to check the fluid level. Be careful, the Mazda 5-speed tranny is to be filled with Mercon ATF (automatic transmission fluid), not heavy gear lube. Fill with fluid until it begins to run out of the threaded plug hole.
You can use any SAE certified automatic transmission fluid in your 1992 Mitsubishi. You should never overfill your automatic transmission fluid.
Synchromesh Manual Transmission Fluid
You add transmission fluid down the transmission dipstick hole.
