A 2003 Ford F-250 column gear shifter can be fixed by simply tightening it again. You can tighten it by turning the adjustment wheel on the lower right side of the steering column.
Follow this link: http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/646555-4r100-shift-linkage.html It walks through how to fix this problem. Good Luck.
For which veh?
Check the linkage from the gear selector (shifter) to the transmission. It may have come loose. If it's intact, check your transmission fluid level. If this doesn't fix the problem, then you'll have to have it towed to the shop.
I have this same problem. A broken shifter box. I will repost a fix as soon asap.
shifter is broke. my ranger was the same way. take the shifter off , and the ear on the other end will be broke. simple to fix. jus find another shifter like i did.
You cannot "fix" it. But you can replace it in about an hour.
first most obvious, make sure the transfer case is not in neutral. If the shifter is stuck in one position you can access the floor panel over the shifter, then remove the shifter, sometimes when worn or loose they can become stuck and you can fix it by lifting the shifter out of the trans. Lastly, and you would probably already suspect this, the clutch is gone, but you would have had a lot of issues and slippage leading up to a complete failure.
I take it you mean that the shifter is loose and is too sloppy to properly find reverse or drive. To fix this, lie on your back under the dash - there is a gold colored triangular plate with two bolts in it. If you wiggle the shifter you will see it move. You may not have the right bit for them, but you can use an Allen key in a pinch. tighten these two bolts and you're done!
install transmission shifter assembly
Is it safe to put back the cable into the clip after it was loose?Yes - it just may be coming loose again in the near future. Look at any bending or if the retainer clip is misshapen that can be straightened out.
The shift linkage may become sloppy due to the retaining bolts for the shift bracket loosening. To fix this, look under the dash to the left of the brake pedal. The shift cable comes up from the floor on the left side- follow it to the top, where it connects to the shift bracket that bolts the column shifter. There are two torx bolts (t-27 size) that may be loose that retain the bracket to the column shifter. Tighten these bolts, check to see if the linkage has improved. You may need to readjust the shift indicator after this fix.
