The shift linkage is either broken or out of adjustment. Check the linkage where it connects to the transmission and make sure that it is connected properly.

take out the 4 bolts that hold the steeering column,undo the wire to the shift indicator,drop the column down,,undo the two bolts holding the shifter cable,undo the bolt holding the steering shaft,unhook all wiring,it should pull right out.
