The joystick assembly needs to be removed and replaced.
5 (1001 model) or 7 screws (2001 model) are removed to allow you to take the faceplate off.
The 1001 model joystick is screwed to the inside surface of the faceplate. The 2001 model is held to the motherboard by 2 screws. The motherboard MUST be lifted up slightly before removing the old joystick. And you MUST transfer the clear contact gel from the old joystick to the new before installing the new one. DO NOT DESTROY THE CONTACT GEL by carelessly ripping the old joystick out. Good luck finding a replacement on planet Earth if you destroy it.
