If your idle is surging, or your car is dying at idle, you probably have a bad MAP sensor.
The map sensor is easy to find. It will be a grey or black ( black is more common) plasic box mounted with 2 screws at the back left of your intake. The vacuum line to it may also be the problem. it's about the size of an open matchbook. and about a half inch thick. The vaccume line enters from the side you can't see.
If it's not the map sensor, It's most likely the TPS throttle position sensor. It's easy to find. It's on the throttle body.

See the answer to 2000 Bonneville Neutral Safety Switch Location. Had the same problem and that was my fix. You can install a separate Start Button in the Starter circuit to start the car also.
buy a hanes manual at oreilly auto parts. cost about $16 it will show you how to fix all problems on your car.
about $150 for the alternator and 1/2 hr labor or shop minimum charge - my guess $215 - $225
Had the problem with Bonneville not starting....turned out to be the security module. Your mechanic should be able to bypass the security module with a $15 part from Radio Shack. Pretty easy fix.
It is the IAC, the idle air controller will definitely cause that, about $50.00 and a half hour. Located behind the throttle body, back center of engine.
