It is probably not closing fully. Take a proper size torx socket and loosen the fasteners on both the striker and the latch. There should be some adjustment there. Once the catch can grasp the striker fully it will be secure........1930fcoupe
There is not a dipstick for the 2002 Cavalier. It is a closed transmission so it must be taken into a shop to be checked.

Check that the latch is working. With the door open, Push the latch back with a screwdriver, & make sure it is holding in the closed position. If it does not hold closed the lock or inner door actuating mechanism may be faulty & would possibly need to be replaced. If it does hold closed, it should be just a matter of adjusting the striker plate.
