Remove the mower deck. Remove the phillips head screw at the end of the shaft underneath the mower. The releases your shaft from the bootom of mower. Remove steering wheel and remove shaft. Replace parts as needed.
The answer to this question depends on where the problem is in the steering system. The most common problem I have had with Craftsman riding mowers is the "support shaft" at the bottom of the steering column. As you turn the wheel look down the shaft and see where all the play is. The ball joint comes on the steering rod. You will need to purchase a new steering rod.
