rather not try fix, its better to replace it new, you dont want its seizing and over heating your engine. Any part / spares shop should stock it for pretty cheap
the hose that is not connected to the water pump there is a part that is called the goose neck that is covering the thermostat you must remove that first to change the thermostat

The 1997 VW Jetta thermostat is located inside of the thermostat housing. Remove the thermostat housing retaining bolts. Remove the water supply hose. Reverse the process to install the new thermostat.

I just had the thermostat housing replaced on my 99 Jetta VR6. It's on the right (driver's) side of the engine block. The battery and battery tray should be removed to get access to the thermostat.
