Knocking or hammering on your water pipes is caused by the air chambers within the pipes, which are designed to cussion the pipes against the pressure of the water that flows through them, being depleted to some degree. This is easily fixed, provided that you go about it in the right way--you do not need to call a plumber.
First of all, and I can't stress how important this is, you MUST turn off the main water valve in your house to prevent any further water from entering the pipes--do this first.
Next, turn on every faucet (tap) and flush all of the toilets until no more water will come out. When you are sure that everything has been drained dry, turn OFF all of the faucets (taps).
Now turn the main water valve back on slowly. What this does it to allow the air chambers to be replenished with the correct amount of air to prevent the shock from the water flowing under pressure.
It sounds like you are installing a new faucet. If that is the case read the manufacturer's instructions. If you are re-installing an older faucet, using the plumbers putty doesn't hurt.
Sounds like the anode is giving up the ghost or a faulty dip tube

sounds like a leak of some kind
something broke
It sounds as if you are describing "hammering" caused by air trapped in the supply lines. There is a "hammering" add on for your pipes that can be installed by a DIY person yet usually a plumber might be your best answer. Water travels through supply lines faster than you would suspect and the abrupt stopping (when a faucet is closed) can have the water continue, momentarily, causing the sound you mentioned, the device helps cushion the water/airflow.
what engine?
True
Sounds like your lifters are bad and might need ajusted or changed, it could be your cam not looping.
if it sounds like the knocking is coming from the bottom of the engine i would bet it was the rods or rod bearings may be worn. if the knocking is on the top ,then i would have the lifters and or the rocker arms checked.
Knocking as opposed to pinging or ticking, usually means seriously worn bearings of some sort. Time for an overhaul.
get a new trany or rebildit cuz its going out unless the knocking is from moter it might be timing

Sounds like you have big problems, sounds like it has been run low on oil, and or the oil pump quit working, and you wont be driving the car much longer,it sounds like rods knocking, which means new engine time .
Sounds like a piston hitting the cylinder head. A lifter will usually tick, but a piston will sound more like this knocking noise.
Not exactly one sounds more like hydraulic shock waves passing through the system
what caused knocking sounds for me was a pully on the serpentine belt that was attached to the power steering pump. the pump gasket busted which in turned damaged the pully. If you have a lift it is not too hard to replace. Doing while you're vehicle is on stands is a nightmare. its about a 650 fix at a mechanic...
