Also, be prepared to discuss your short and long-term academic and career goals with your counselor.
Speak to Instructors about Potential Job OpportunitiesMany students enjoy working as a teaching assistant (TA). A teaching assistant job may be paid or unpaid, but a student can gain an enormous amount of valuable work experience in this type of position. You can speak directly to instructors in your department to locate an appropriate teaching position. Instructors may also recommend other types of jobs for you to pursue based on your qualifications, such as tutoring positions.
Become a VolunteerMany businesses, companies, and non-profit organizations allow students to work for them on a volunteer basis. You can apply for volunteer positions by contacting churches, hospitals, tutoring agencies, shelters, libraries, or other appropriate facilities. Please note that volunteer positions are usually unpaid positions, therefore you will not receive compensation for your time and effort. However, you will have the opportunity to gain helpful work experience, make a difference in other peoples lives, and network with those who share your same interests.
Apply for an InternshipAnother way to earn valuable work experience is to complete an internship program. Internships allow students to gain knowledge, expertise and skills related to their chosen career path. Internships may be paid or unpaid positions; and many students earn college credit for completing an approved internship. Not only can students gain an enormous amount of experience as an intern, but students are also able to receive on-the-job training directly from professionals in that field. In addition, being an intern allows students to develop a network of contacts; and some students are even offered a permanent job position with that particular company or organization after completing their internship.
As you can see, there are several ways that you can gain valuable work experience while you are a college student. Be sure to update your resume before you search for positions; and also update your reference sheet with current contact information for at least three professional references.
