A calm voice, no sudden movements, repeat the same phrase when you give it food. Long sticks or cords remind the bird of predators so don't move them when the bird is in the room.
If it doesn't get too disturbed you can catch it with a towel and hold it until the heart rate goes down, but be sure it doesn't get overheated when you do this, hold it loosely on the body and make a ring with your fingers around the neck so it can't go away.
When my female had her first batch of eggs she was a little confused. She came to "mommy" for comfort and I would lie on the bed while she rested on my chest. My heart rate was comforting to her, so I would try that with a new bird.
You could also play with a shiny ring or other object and see if your bird joins you.
Also, pet birds love to receive treats. A lot of birds like spray millet...a lot, so I offer them some spray millet with your hand. Because this is teaching them that hands are good, because they offer treats. You may also want to touch your bird on it's belly or chest, and then give it a bit of millet so it knows that your hand is good. But make sure you do not give your bird too much millet, or it could become obese or overweight. Abby, my green cheek conure, has an average weight of 70 grams. When you go to your AVIAN vet, be sure to ask them what your bird's average weight is, and if you bird is over/under their weight, and if it is healthy for them to be that weight.
