Once you open minecraft, and you're logged in, instead of clicking "Singleplayer" click "Multiplayer". Now you can find a server you want on the interwebs, and copy the IP address down on direct connect, that is to say if this is your first time, and you're experimenting. If not, then click "Add server" and do the same.
