To know how to get rid of a ghost, you first have to understand 3 different types of hauntings:

Residual Haunts -- Residual hauntings are non-interactive. They're simply the energy of someone (or groups of people) still residing in an area. Hotel staircases are notorious for harboring a residual haunting. After so many people cross those same stairs over and over again, it's natural to assume that energy will stick around after the people leave! Footsteps, voices, smells, and even apparitions can all fall under the category of a Residual Haunt. As far as I know, there's really no way to get rid of a residual haunt; however, there is no real reason to get rid of it either. Besides being annoying, there is no harm in a residual haunt.

Poltergeist Haunts -- Poltergeist is simply a word meaning "noisy ghost". Poltergeist activity is usually caused by a living person's own stress, manifesting itself in visible, or audible ways. For example: if someone is a chef, and they're very frustrated and tired when they come home from the kitchen, that frustration may manifest itself in the house. Kitchen objects may end up missing, or may turn up in a completely different spot than where you left it, or they may go flying across the room! Every person has psychokinetic energy (also known as PK energy) and this energy can sometimes be subconsciously accessed when under emotional duress.

Note: It's important to remember that no one is at fault in a Poltergeist Haunting. Even if someone in the house is causing poltergeist activity, it doesn't make that person "bad" or "weird". It just means their PK energy is manifesting itself due to stress.

If you suspect poltergeist activity, then try to change the mood of the house, or try to de-stress a little bit. Try some yoga, or develop an exercise routine. Take a relaxing bath or light some candles to clear your head. Maybe you'll find the PK activity ceases!

Intelligent/Traditional Hauntings -- This is the least common type of haunting, but if you feel that you've got a good old fashioned, honest to goodness "ghost" in your house, you CAN take control of the situation.

Your house is just that - YOUR house. If you want to make a positive change, then gather all the members of the household, and address the spirit directly. Tell it that you mean it no disrespect, but that this is now YOUR house. YOU are ordering it to no longer bother anyone living in this house. YOU command it to leave now in peace. You don't have to be angry, but you must be stern and resolute. Believe in yourself, and it will make a difference.
