It very simple to get a rathian ruby, it's just a matter of luck. Find yourself a good high rank group( preferably HR 50+). Then go on a high rank rathian cap mission. Remember to always break the head, cut the tail, and cap it. If you get tired of doing this, just break the head and cut it's tail then end via subquest.
One of my friends have gotten a rathian ruby by doing that and gotten a rathian ruby. So have I. I don't really recommand making it's armor. It doesn't have good skills except earplugs and health plus 50. But if you're really desperate for it, go head and make it.
If you want to make it's armor and weapon, make the weapon first. If you got the ruby your first time like me, MAKE THE WEAPON FIRST!

Hi there, rathian plates are so annoying. NOTE: this is a mh3 answer. Get a full baggi set and gem it for trapmaster skill (need 5 jewels) Next select the capture quest "royal rumble". In the quest take out the supply shock trap. You need to have brought a shock and pitfall trap with you. Use the pitfall trap to break her face (if she escapes before the face breaks simply keep hitting it). Now use your shock trap, run round to her tail and hit the exact middle of it. If it doesnt sever with the first trap, use the next. Now carve it. (3% to get plate) Now you should have completed both sub quests. End via subquest (go to the bed in the home base and select "end via sub" instead of rest). You should get at least 2 capture rewards and 1 break item. You have a 2% chance per capture item to get a plate. You also have a 3% chance per break item. Including the tail carve that's a combined 10% chance to get plate. So if you repeat this method ten times (shouldn't need to, but just in case) you should statisticly get a plate. Hope this helps :)
