Almond oil is obtained by extracting the natural oil present in almonds. One common method is mechanical pressing, in which prepared almonds are pressed to release their oil. The exact process depends on the equipment used and the type of almond oil being produced.
At Pure Tatva, we follow a mechanical extraction process to make our Badaam Rogan. Here is a simplified explanation of how the process works.
The process starts with selecting suitable-quality almonds. Their condition and preparation matter because the quality of the raw material can influence the final oil.
Before extraction, the almonds are prepared under controlled conditions. Depending on the raw material and equipment, conditioning may be used to help achieve suitable pressing conditions.
The prepared almonds are pressed using a hydraulic press. Pressure helps release the oil from the almonds without relying on a chemical solvent extraction process. The temperature and extraction yield depend on the equipment and operating conditions.
After pressing, the oil may contain small suspended particles. Filtration helps remove these particles and improve the clarity of the finished product.
The solid material left after pressing is commonly called almond cake or press cake. Some oil may remain in it, depending on how efficiently the almonds were pressed. Its composition and suitability for further use depend on the processing method and food-safety requirements.
At Pure Tatva, we use our hydraulic pressing approach to produce Badaam Rogan, with an emphasis on raw-material selection and careful processing.
One thing worth remembering is that almond oil quality is not determined by the extraction method alone. Almond quality, processing conditions, filtration, packaging and storage all play a role. When buying almond oil, look for clear ingredient information and a manufacturer that can explain its production process.

Almond oil is used as a carrier oil in aromatherapy. Essential oils need to be mixed into a carrier (base) oil since most of them are too potent and concentrated to be used undiluted on the skin. There are 2 forms of almond oil: bitter (known as just "almond oil") and sweet. Sweet almond oil is preferred by most aromatherapists and can be used in aromatherapy recipes for children.
Almond extract is just a flavoring, you can substitute any other flavor for it. This of course changes what you are making. Vanilla would be a common substitute or Rum depending on what the recipe is.
