Most often done while taking the photograph.
Switch to aperture priority mode ( if you can ), stand back a ways and zoom in on the subject, use the smallest "F" number available ( F5.6) usually ( if you can ).
To make it even more pronounced increase the distance between you and your subject, so if you want to do a portrait put them relatively close and use a far away background.
The farther away the background is from the subject you are focusing on the blurrier it will be.
