How do you get copyright permission to adapt an existing play to a musical?

You would have to contact the literary agent of the playwright as well as the company holding the rights to publishing it, not always the same. You would need the playwrights permission, their publishing company and any production companies that may hold rights to the performance of the material, options on movie or options on adaption into musical, Opera, etc. That information shouldn't be hard to find, got to MTI or Samuel French and find out the literary agency and then contact them. I'm sure they'll want to see what you've written like a treatment of the musical version, at least hear a few of the songs and see if you have attached anyone with experience in doing this kind of thing.
