In relatively new locks, you should be able to comb them out by starting at the tip and slowly combing out the knots. In more mature locks you can soak your head in conditioners, or olive oil, then comb out.
If you don't want a high brand over-priced dread shampoo you could always use baking soda and water.. or use a pharmacy anti-residue shampoo they strip buildup but some can leave residues behind..it's better to do it the natural way.
