The term "flying tanks" is a term that got out of hand (mis-used). It actually refers to aircraft such as the A-10 Thunderbolt II (aka Warthog) and the AH-64 Apache Helicopter. Both were often nick-named flying tanks; as they are heavily armored & heavily gunned tank killers.

Unlike the tanks of today, the first tanks while revolutionary, were not what would be acceptable today. They were slow, cramped, hot, and dangerous. The crew members had to have face protection against metal shards flying inside the tank while being hit by machine gun fire. These early tanks were great for the day, but their day has past. To see how early tanks are bad, just look at today's improvements. Today's tanks are faster, better equipped, and they have better armor.
