It depends on what operating system you have.

For example:

Windows (2000, XP, Vista) - Open Control Panel and Select "Power optionsl. There should be a tab for Hibernate. You need to actually select the option "Enable Hibernation" on this tab for it to work. From here, you can select "Hibernate" when you choose Shut Down from the start menu, or your computer may have a keyboard shortcut.

Certain versions of windows may not have this option though.

Mac OS X - Close the laptop lid, or select Sleep from the Apple menu. Hibernate only really comes into play when the battery is about to die on Apple laptops.

Quick tip for the future - it helps if you specify some important details such as the operating system in the question.

Hibernation mode is like a midway point between sleep mode and shutdown. You have to press the power button to turn it back on and can pick up where you left off instead of having to start over. To put a computer in hibernation on windows 7, click start menu, then the little arrow next to shutdown. It will be in that drop down list. Alliteratively, you can open start menu, right click and properties. should be a 'power button action' drop down menu. change that to hibernation and the shutdown option will be changed to hibernation. This is useful if you are the type of person that doesn't like to wait for a computer to boot up.

Can computer in hibernation still download?

A computer in Hibernation mode can not do any activity, including downloading. Hibernation mode saves all information that was in your computer's memory to the hard drive and physically powers off.

Differentiate between computer standby and computer hibernation?

Hibernation allows you to remove all power - the session is saved to the hard drive- Standby keeps the session in RAM for a quick restart; but if you remove power (change battery on a laptop or pull the network cord on a stationary machine) you will loose your session and any unsaved work and potentially damage some software (though most are pretty good these days - you never can tell!)

Why the computer is always using?

The computer is always running when booted up because there are several programs that run in the background that are not seen by the user. The computer will shut down after a term of inactivity to a hibernation stage. This is to save energy within the computer.

What is the difference between sleep mode and hibernate?

Sleep mode makes the computer "Stand By." The monitor turns off and the computer goes on power saving mode. Hibernation turns off the computer off, but saves everything that you were doing (such as your internet pages or word documents open at the time) for when you next turn on the computer.

Why does your computer shut down while im gone?

I assume you're using Microsoft Vista on your computer. Also, it depends on your definition of "shut down". Is it "Sleep" mode or really a real actual "Power Off" shutdown? or "Hibernation" mode? The most probable reason is that your computer is set to "Hibernate". This normally kicks in when your computer is running on battery mode (ie, a notebook) when you're away. After x minute (depending on settings), your computer will go into hibernation; to know if you were hibernating; switch on the PC; if the computer boots up to the same exact state when you left it (ie, all the programs were still running and data available), then you were in either hibernation mode (I assume it is not in sleep mode) Click the Start button > Control Panel > Power Option > Change Plan Setting You will be able to change the way your computer behave from there. It will be good to know if your computer is still connected to the power (is your power still on?) when you're away. This affects when/if the Hibernation mode will kick in. Good luck!
