If your hair is black, then you should lighten it all over to about a light brownish color. That shouldn't damage your hair too much unless you have previous color in you cortex of your hair. If you have previous color on your hair you have to keep in mind when you lighten your hair, you have the undertones of previous hair going to come back to haunt you, so make sure you have enough lightener to lighten up the darker spots if you have any and after you get it light enough, add the color brown you want on top of the lightened hair. That's a double process hair color, it's very simple even if you have multiple colors on your hair, good luck!
