There are many ways to get money, the normal way is to buy diplomats with the money you start with at the beginning of the game and offer trade deals to other nations.
Also you get lots of money when you conquer a city.
My favourite method of getting money is by using the cheat: add_money 40000, you can do this millions of times and make your faction the richest in the known world.
