It depends on the situation. If the person has received too much insulin, (hypoglycemia) then you should feed the victim a tsp of suger or honey. If the victim has passed out, do not try to force anything down the victims throat, instead, but a tsp of moist sugar under the victims tongue, or honey or syrup on the gums, and it will quickly be dissolved. Blood sugar can be made to rise quickly this way and victim will regain consciousness. When they do, feed some longer-lasting foods (vegetables, grains) to keep blood sugar from immediately falling again.

If the emergency is Diabetic Ketoacidosis, brought on by lack of insulin, the victim will be lethargic, dehydrated, possibly feverish, possibly comatose. Victim needs to get to a hospital right away. If conscious, make sure they drink as much water as possible and take a shot of their fastest-acting insulin before they go. If not, call emergency services and mention Diabetic Ketoacidosis to the paramedics. This cannot be treated at home.

There are two types of diabetic emergency.

One, hypoglycemia, (low blood sugar), takes place when too much insulin is injected, or too little food is consumed along with a normal dose. It causes fainting and coma. It is immediately life-threatening (much like not breathing-- the brain can be damaged within minutes), but very easy to treat -- you just need to put sugar or syrup into the patient via any mucous membrane and it will be absorbed into the bloodstream in seconds.

The other emergency, Diabetic Ketoacidosis, is caused by lack of insulin and dehydration, and can develop over a period of hours. It's more complicated to explain, and much more complicated to treat. It too can cause fainting and coma, but can only be treated in hospital. More information on the causes and treatment of DKA see the link below.

  • Call for help. Use an emergency telephone number, or transport to an emergency room or clinic or doctor's office for immediate medical care.
  • If working equipment (ie, glucose meters) are available, a blood glucose level reading should be taken immediately. NEVER GIVE INSULIN unless you are completely confident you know what you're doing and are sure the patient is NOT HYPOGLYCEMIC. Mistakes with insulin can kill, and quickly.

Will fried shrimp rise blood sugar?

Most foods will raise your blood sugar. The question is to what degree. If you're a diabetic you should endeavour to maintain a level blood sugar and try to avoid spikes which can be hard on your system. The way you prepare your food also impacts on how your blood sugar behaves. Fried food is not the best choice for a diabetic.

Blood Sugar Maintenance In A Diabetic Weight Loss Diet Plan?

Any good diabetic weight loss diet plan will have at the center of the plan a clear technique for dealing with blood sugar levels. Most prominently, carbohydrates need to be controlled so that a consistent level of blood sugar is maintained. In some cases, this can mean measuring blood sugar before each meal in the diabetic weight loss diet plan and then adjusting the amount of carbohydrates that are consumed afterwards. A well thought out diabetic weight loss diet plan can reasonably approximate the rise in blood sugar so that it does not spike too high after eating. The plan should also account for periods between meals where small amounts of simple carbohydrates can be used to maintain blood sugar levels.

What will happen if a diabetic injects and overdose of insulin?

Insulin reduces blood sugar. Taking too much insulin will drastically lower the body's blood sugar. Your body needs this glucose for fuel, and without it, it cannot function. A person with low blood sugar will start to have symptoms such as shaking, confusion, sweating, hunger, lightheadedness, and eventually will lose consciousness if their blood sugar does not rise. If their blood sugar drops too low, and is not treated, the person will die.
