Well, the obvious answer is to stitch right to the corner and stop with the needle down in the fabric, pick the presser foot up and pivot the fabrics 90 degrees then continue stitching. When the seam is finished, clip the corner off and turn the fabrics right side out. BUT, THIS WILL NOT GIVE YOU A NICE SHARP CORNER!

The correct way to do it is to stop stitching with the needle down in the fabric just before reaching the corner, pick the presser foot up and pivot the fabrics 45 degrees and take 2 stitches that are 1 mm long (yes, you have to adjust the stitch length). Stop with the needle down in the fabric and pivot the fabrics another 45 degrees. Be sure to readjust your stitch length and continue stitching. When the seam is finished, clip the corner off and turn the fabric right side out.

The "rule" to remember that stitching a sharp corner will result in a blunt corner, but stitching a blunt corner will turn perfectly square.

Practice this on scraps by using a thin leaded pencil to mark your stitching lines so you'll know exactly where you'll need to stop for the corners.

What is the seam allowance in sewing used for?

The seam allowance is needed to allow for extra fabric where separate pieces of fabric are joined together at seams. If seam allowances were not provided you wouldn't be able to join pieces together or your garment would end up being too small. If you look at the inside of a shirt, for example, you will see that the stitches take up fabric and that is what seam allowances are for.

When you are sewing or stitching why do you need a seam?

The seam is simply the name of the line that is created when two pieces of fabric are joined together. If you are sewing any two pieces together, the place where they are joined is called the seam. Maybe you are wondering about the seam allowance, which is the amount of fabric alloted to sewing the pieces together. The seam allowance is the distance from the edge you put your line of sewing. In many fabrics that allowance can be very small, but some fabrics require a larger allowance to minimize fraying.

How do you hand piece in quilting?

I usually make a template ( from cardboard ) of the pieces I want to make. [ Example: triangles or squares, of a predetermined pattern. ] I lay the fabric out, wrong side up ( use a sheet of sand paper under the fabric, to keep it from sliding around ), lay the template on the fabric and trace out as many pieces as you will need of that shape and fabric choice. Cut the pieces out, ALLOWING FOR quarter inch seams. Pin the pieces in place, one at a time, and hand sew them together, creating the pattern you have chosen. Time consuming, but well worth it !
