To leave, you would have to exit the forest the way you came in. There is no exit from the Gremlin scene except to "give up" and get set back to the preceding (troll) scene. At the end (forest center), you can exit by going right into the cave, then up all the way to the upper left, which exits into the construction site.
*It may be useful to obtain the Haunted House card from the store. Using the Haunted House lets you leave anywhere because it sends you to the island map. This also means that you have to re-enter an island you left (on Astro Knights, your spaceship parks on top of the castle) although you retain any items you had. The Haunted House is very valuable for escaping glitches that can trap your player, or for leaving spots (like the World's Fair on Mystery Train) where there is no other way to leave without restarting the island.

What do you do after you get past the dryads on Twisted thicket?
After you pass the dryads, you will face the elves on the forest vines. Work your way left, avoiding the elves as they cut off the vines. Then go up and right until you reach the long vines. Climb up while moving from vine to vine to keep from being dropped. You will find the second rune near the top.
