I have three cats and one dog, so I unforunately have experience with pet odors in the carpet and elsewhere in my house. I prefer not to use chemical-laden cleaning products, opting instead for all-natural solutions to this problem. I vacuum weekly (and sometimes more often, if needed) to eliminate all the pet hair and smells. I also will sprinkle baking soda all over the carpet and let it sit for at least 15 minutes (though I have let it sit for as long as 24 hours to really soak up odors) and then vacuum. I also use vinegar throughout the house to absorb smells. You won't smell the vinegar either and it works to naturally eliminate unpleasant odors. If I find a soiled spot on the carpet, I immediately blot any excess liquid, lightly scrub with vinegar, and then sprinkle baking soda over the spot. I let the baking soda sit for at least 24 hours before vacuuming it up. That usually does the trick to eliminate the smell. Another good tactic is to open the windows whenever you can. That brings in fresh, clean air to counteract the stagnant air in the house.
