The people of Japan have raised quail for centuries. The are not like chickens in the breeding and care. Keeping them in solitary pairs produces the best results. Separate cages are needed. Males are aggressive and very territorial.

If you are going to raise quail you will have to plan your project. You will need to know what breed of quail you want to raise. I would strongly recommend either the Coturnix or Bobwhite quail. This will help in determining the type of coops needed and the amount of space. You will also have to determine if you are going to raise your quail on the ground or in wire floored coops. Raising quail in ground pens can present more disease problems then raising on wire. Especially if you live in a damp type environment.
If you are starting out as a beginner to raising quail, you will have to have everything you need in place before you make a purchase of eggs or quail chicks. Purchasing quail eggs will save you money as opposed to purchasing chicks. But if you are a first timer, you may have a bad hatch rate due to lack of knowledge. Although if you plan on pursuing this venture you will at some point have to use an incubator anyway. Quail are not known to hatch their own eggs to well in captivity.
Here are the things you need to have in place before you purchase your quail. You will need an incubator, I suggest a fan forced air, self turning type incubator. You will need a brooder or brooding area. The area required is determined by the amount of quail chicks you will have. You will also need your grow out and pairing pens constructed. I would also suggest you check your incubator and brooder to make sure they are functioning properly before you order your quail.
Remember one thing, raising quail is totally different than any animal you have ever raised. The more knowledge you can get before you start, the better off you will be.
