"Head colds" that are caused by viruses cannot be quickly eliminated. However, various consumer products are promoted that are designed to boost your immune system. Some may be effective, for some individuals.

See a doctor or health care professional if your symptoms become severe, because there are complications that can be serious.

High fever is the most obvious, and should not be allowed to persist. Chronic coughing can damage your lungs, and accumulated fluid can cause "walking pneumonia"). Irritated throats can develop streptococcal infections.

If your nose and chest are congested, you can sometimes get relief from over-the-counter antihistamines, saline nasal spray, inhalers and other mild treatments. Tylenol (acetaminophen) can reduce fever and headaches and allow you to sleep. The body's own defenses will normally ease the symptoms over time.

That may not be possible, the body usually needs a little more healing time. Salt water gargles can help fairly quickly if the sore throat is due to irritation or due to a virus like the cold or flu. There's nothing that will absolutely guarantee a 1-day recovery, but there are a few things that can help shorten the duration of any sore throat caused by a cold or the flu:

  1. Take Vitamin C supplements or eat foods rich in Vitamin C, such as citrus, peppers or tomatoes.
  2. Use Zinc lozenges. Sucking on these lozenges is more effective than using zinc supplement tablets to shorten the duration of a cold or flu. Recent studies suggest that this is due to the zinc being on the mucous tissue of your mouth and throat and preventing the cold or flu virus from easily accessing and hijacking the cells in that tissue.
  3. Get plenty of rest. Sleep and bedrest will allow your body to use more of your resources to fight the infection, since it doesn't have to expend energy on your normal day-to-day activities when you rest. Rest also helps to keep your body from producing the normal wastes related to activity and muscle use that can interfere with the immune system's healing abilities (since some of the same immune blood cells are needed to break down those wastes). Your body can deal with the sore throat better when not having to do both jobs at once.
  4. Make sure to eat something, even just some chicken soup and crackers, as long as you can possibly stomach it. Your body will also have more resources to fight the infection if it isn't running on empty.
  5. Drink plenty of liquids since fever can accompany a sore throat and you could become dehydrated. The body needs a lot of water to be able to wash away irritants and germs, to keep the blood flow freely moving to get the blood cells needed to fight the problem to the places where the battle is taking place, and to provide other body systems with the needed water for repairing damage done by the agent causing the sore throat, clearing mucus build up, and general well being.
  6. If the throat shows signs of tissue swelling, difficulty or pain with swallowing, exudate, red or white spots, and/or you have a fever or other signs of infection by bacteria, you may need to see a physician to be sure it is not strep throat or sore throat due to another bacterial infection. If it is due to bacteria, the doctor will need to give you an antibiotic prescription. These do nothing to help if the sore throat is due to a virus such as the common cold or flu viruses, however, and wastes your money to buy them.

First blow your nose, if mucus comes out then use a netti pot or use nasel spray. If not it is just pressure and you can use a nose strip to open up airways. :)

Why does the cold make your head hurt?

When something very cold touches the center of the palate, the cold temperature can set off certain nerves that control how much blood flows to your head. The nerves respond by causing the blood vessels in the head to swell up. This quick swelling of the blood vessels is what causes your head to pound and hurt. Some people call this a "brain freeze," even though nothing is really happening in the brain - it's all in the blood vessels of the head.

Is it safe to run in cold weather when you have a cold or flu?

No. Getting out in the sun may help get rid of a cold, but running or any physical exercise is contraindicated (not good) when you have a cold. Your body needs rest to do the work to get rid of your cold, so you should avoid strenuous exercise like running if you want to get rid of a cold faster.
