Purple is usually indicitative of copper in the water, usually caused by the etching of copper coming from the heat exchanger of your pool heater. I have spoken with manufacturers heater engineers and they tell me that high Cyanuric Acid levels will not cause damage to copper heat exchangers. Although, high Cyanuric Acid levels are not good in pool water and are still acidic in nature although it is a basic acid.

As a CPO pool service technician here in Tennessee we run into this problem from time to time and have discovered it is usually due to the build up of hydrochloric acid (i.e., excess chlorine) or the back flow of hydrochloric acid through the copper heat exchanger of the pool heater. Back flow happens when you turn off your pool pump and chlorinated acid flows backwards into the heater in high concentrations.

This can be remedied back have a qualified pool service professional plumb in-line a check-valve (or backflow preventer) between the pool sanitizer feeder system (i.e., chlorinator, salt cell, etc.) and the pool heater unit.

You can usually remove the purple stains with a treatment of ascorbic acid (Vitamin C, we recommend the brand 'Nautral Chemistry Stain Free'. It has worked the best in our area). After adding the ascorbic acid you follow it up with a metal sequestering agent (We use 'Natural Chemistry Metal Free' as to keep with the same system of treatment chemicals designed to work in tandem with one another). Before adding any of these chemicals though we add a small amount of a filter media to the filter to catch the metal as it passes through the filter (see your neighborhood pool shop to ask them about filter media products).

Let the pool run for 24 hrs before backwashing or washing filter cartridges. We are going though this problem now....not only the ring but patchs of purple on the liner walls and bottom....Our Aquabot's filter bag fills up with a clay like material..

I have shocked the pool three times in one day...tried Black and regular Algaecide...Metal out and it's still there....I scrubbed the ring with a Scotchbrite pad and it look ok for a day or two and the ring started back...

I just found some info on the web saying high levels of Cyanuric Acid can cause the problem....Will try draining 1/4 of the pool water and refilling each day until the CA level is down to proper levels....

Hope this helped a little... I have just opened my pool (May 2005) and have purple residue all over the steps, swimout, hot tub and pool walls. I had a copper problem last summer and currently have slightly high cyanuric acid (87). Pool has been opened and running constantly for 3 days, the purple seems to be getting better (I keep vaccuuming it out). Do you have any treatment ideas?

Get rid of dirt ring aroung the swimming pool?

There are suitable products available at your pool shop. avoid cleaners with phosphates as these feed Algae the last thing a pool needs. A good way to keep the ring of the pool is to have the skimmer working as well as possible or use a floating skimmer that will always work at optimum.

How can you get rid of black fungus -under the vinly liner in an inground swimming pool?

Some types of bacteria and fungus found in the soil can actually penetrate through a vinyl liner and cause stains to appear on the liner. Usually they will start off as spotted or cloud-like formations on the liner. Algaecides used in the pool water have little if any effect on the stains caused from bacteria, since it doesn't get to the source of the bacteria in the soil. If a pool is known to have a problem with bacteria staining the liner, the ground underneath the liner may be treated with a solution of one half household chlorine bleach and one half water. Mix the bleach in the water and mist the floor of the pool with a small garden sprayer three or four times prior to dropping the new liner in the pool. After the last application of bleach solution, wait several hours before dropping the liner; making sure the solution has been absorbed into the ground.

How can you get rid of wrinkles in a vinyl liner?

That's a lot easier to do BEFORE you put the water in the pool. If you've already put water in the pool, it will be difficult to do without tearing the liner. Water is a little over 8 pounds per gallon, so it really presses down on the liner.

Can you get rid of bleach stain on your pool liner?

As far as I can tell, it is not structurally harmful to vinyl pool liners, but can fade their coloring. The first year I had a pool, I made the mistake of dumping 1/2 pound of calcium hypochlorite (bleach) in one spot in the pool, which caused the liner to turn from blue to white, but did not cause it to leak.

How do you get rid of purple water in swimming pool?

Are you using an 'ionizer'? One of those gadgets that add copper and silver ions to the water? If so, your purple ring could be from that - the ions conmbined with added chlorine. We just started having " the purple ring " . It seems to be from the corrosion of the brass in the pump. WHy? that we do not know as we have changed nothing in the environment or pool maintenance or additives since filling it five years ago. We are tracing tree pest spray as a possible source of the chemical change in the water. I also have a purple ring around my pool and connecting spa. I have been using a "chlorine floater" and the PH level is very low, (not changing color at all when the test solution is added) I have added the recommended amount of soda ash, and still not getting good results, what's next??? If you regularly use an algaecide that contains copper in it, the level of copper will build in your pool and react with the chlorine sanitizer, creating the "purple ring." Try using a product like "metal out" as instructed on the bottle. Vacuum your pool, backwash it, and switch to a non-copper based algaecide, to prevent future "Barney" rings. I am hearing that the purple can be caused by the combination of copper and a high cyanuric acid level.

How do I combat dirt giving way under above ground pool vinyl liner and causing dips in liner 1-2 in depth?

Don't know your particular situation, but it is probably not dirt giving way. Simply, the sand smashing away from jumping in and hitting floor with heels and etc. I had a neighbor that had the same problem. When I got ready to install my pool, I was going to do everything I could to prevent it. I placed sand under the pool and packed it as tight as possible (wet). Used two layers of fan-fold insulating board (used behind vinyl siding 1/4" to 3/8" thick) and taped every seam. Placed liner and filled with water, worked great! Pool floor is still smooth! The pool has been in for seven years and no problems yet! You may also have a problem with moles, believe it or not, and about the only way to get rid of them is to get rid of the Grub Worms and etc.
