The Goldfish followers were part of the Pepperidge Farm ad-games on Poptropica. The followers stopped working after the ad was replaced by a link card to the Goldfish game site. To remove a follower from a deleted card, simply wear another follower. When the new follower is turned off, the old one should be gone as well.
There has recently been a Nanny McPhee quest on poptropica. Activate the pig follower then remove the pig. The goldfish will be gone.
If you completed Nanny McPhee, the "flying pig" follower should still be in your items bag under Store Items. Selecting it will remove the Goldfish followers (which sadly have been removed due to the end of the contract) and install the flying pig. Once you have the pig, remove it and there should be no followers on your character. If you have no follower items, you will have to wait to acquire one to remove the Goldfish, or you can buy a set in the Poptropica store.
The Pepperidge Farm copyrighted characters (Gilbert, Finn, Brooke, Xtreme, and Swimmington) appear as followers in a special costume add-on from the Goldfish ad in Poptropica (July 2010). Rescuing the five characters in two minutes (exclusive of the three minutes of video) awarded the follower pack. (see related question)

There was an ad-game on Poptropica about "Alpha and Omega".You had to be a certain age (around 8 years old?) to get on the ad. When you finished the little short you got a dog costume and the Blue Jay Follower.

Apparently there was some disagreement between Poptropica and Pepperidge Farms over the Goldfish followers that were part of the Goldfish ad-game in July, 2010. (They had also sponsored the contest for early access to Skullduggery island.) Shortly after the game expired, the Goldfish followers disappeared from all costume collections on Poptropica. Those who had the followers in operation retained them until the item was taken off.
