depending on how large your hot tub is, you can just use a pool shark. they plug into the wall, and move around the bottom of the pool, or hot tub if you like. they are really neat, they are basically underwater vacuums.

Will sand and grit ruin your hot tub?

I work at a hot tub factory building hot tubs. I also fix hot tubs. Sand and grit will not ruin a hot tub immediately but it will definitely increase wear on many components. Long term exposure will decrease the time before things start to go wrong. The components that could be affected are: 1. Jet inserts: They could stop spinning, stop turning on/off, or fall apart. 2. Pumps: The impeller can wear rapidly and decrease water flow from constant sand impact. 3. Heater element: The heater element is usually in direct contact with fast moving water. Coatings on the element can be worn away by sand impact which can cause them to fail sooner. Solution: Remove sand often! A cheap and easy way to do this is to siphon it out with a length of hose > Submerge the hose in the hot tub to fill the hose completely with water > Hold your hand over one end of the hose > Drop that end with a few extra feet of hose over the edge of the tub onto the ground while making sure the other end stays under the water in the tub > The water will start to siphon out > Now use the submerged hose end to suck up sand and grit from the tub. -- Dont forget to remove the hose when done or your tub will be empty next time you check it!
