Not as long as it will stay in short fine hair, but it will stay for awhile.
Without gel, using a lot of water will help it stay down. However, if your hair naturally stays or sticks up and/or out, you need gel.

I use a thumb nail amount and rub it between my hands and then style my (short) hair how I want it. Then I use a little hairspray to help it stay.

Well you can apply extra conditioner when taking a shower/bath and after that, dry your hair, comb it with hot water, and then finally, wear a hat to sleep. Do this for about 2 weeks and guaranteed, your hair will stay down. !
You can poof your hair up by teasing it, which means by taking a comb and brushing down on sections of hair to make it tangled at the root then just brush that down a little so its smooth on top and it should stay poofed up
Have ready: -pillow case (small or short hair and large for long hair) - 2-4 hair elastics Step 1: Put your hair in the pillow case strait. Step 2: Lightly tie an elastic around the base of your hair(to hold the pillow case to your hair) Step 3: Lightly tie elastics down the rest of the pillowcase in a row allowing your hair to stay strait! A perm is permanent. It doesn't matter about the straightness of your hair. A perm breaks down the bonds in the hair that make it straight. The perm will last until your hair grows out.
