You need to have iTunes installed on your computer, your handset registered and your computer via iTunes should be authorised to communicate with your handset. If you have completed all these steps then all you have to do is plug in your iPhone 3 to your computer via the special Apple syncing cable that was provided with the handset. Once plugged into your computer iTunes should launch on recognising that your handset is connected to the computer (if not launch iTunes manually), then sync your iPhone. If there is either a software update or iTunes update available, you will be promted to install the update. Select to update and your handset will be updated to the latest IOS available. Apple in one of its more recent updates, now includes the option to update your IOS software without having to connect to your computer to update. If you have this function available (you can find it via tapping the settings button on your iPhone), ensure its enabled and you will be able to update directly via the cloud via iTunes. A point to remember if you are on PAYG or have no wifi available such updates will use up your data allowance or charge for using data.
