The plastic bowl contains the paper oil filter element. It is best to buy the large open socket specifically used to remove the plastic bowl, this will help prevent breaking the bowl and allow you to torque the filter case to the proper specs. Use the new O-ring included with the filter element. Careful the bowl will be full of oil when removed.
Under the dash on passenger side. black plastic box has cover with slide, slide the holder off the cover, remove cover then pull down on filter. Looks just like a home ac filter.
The cabin air filter of a 2004 Volvo s40 is located behind the glove compartment. To install a new filter simply remove the glove box and the filter can easily be replaced.

The Oil Filter is on the top of the engine, to the left of the valve cover. It has a plastic cap that can be wrenched off. The Oil Filter is not a sealed filter that you are used to seeing. It drops in where you removed the black cap.
Cabin Air Filter If it has one it will be behind the glove box .Open the glove box push in on the sides and the glove box will come out the bottom hinge will hold it on behind that. There will be a plastic cover with 4 plastic tabs push them in pull the cover off and there is your CAF.
Top left hand corner. Take off the plastic cover and release the silver metal clips.
Open the hood, look just below the passenger side wiper blade on the cowl and you will see a removable black plastic cabin filter housing cover. Remove the cover to expose the cabin filter. Make note as to how the filter old is positioned as you remove it from the housing. Install the new filter just as the old one was and snap the cover back on, done.
help! you need a 10mm wrench or socket!!! Loosen the 10mm bolt on top of the plastic cover over the air filter assembly!!! Now take a phillip's screw driver & unscrew the plastic screws near the left side of the radiator top support!!! remove the entire plastic cover!!! Now use your thumbs or use a phillip's screw driver to remove the side mounted bolts holding the plastic air filter assembly together!!! Pull plastic assembly apart & remove air filter!!! install in reverse order!!!

You must raise the hood, and remove the plastic cover on the passenger side next to the windshield. Be careful with the washer hose as it also must be removed from the clips holding it. You can purchase a filter at NAPA :-)

Easy. You just unhood 3 or 4 clips from the sides of air filter box located under the hood near driver headlight assambly. Then you pull the plastic piece high enough to take the old air filter out. Then place the new filter in its place, push down plastic cover and close those clips. Done
