There are several things that can cause your speedometer not to work. Begin by connecting a new speedometer cable. Make sure the speed sensor is operating properly.
firstly you find the part off the speedo cable that's broken and then you replace it with a new part then you speedometer will work
Check if it is blocked by anything

I had the same problem - then it stopped working altogether. Turned out to be a severed wire. The wire was grey and could be found going into the middle connector underneath the under bonnet fusebox (nearside) - behind headlight. It looks like the cover to the fusebox wore through the wire - when I soldered back together the speedo worked fine - I had to take the battery tray off to do this.
It cost me $1456.60 in August 2012 (Gasket $71.80, Pump Assy-fuel $759.40, Renault Lab $493, GST $132.42) Work done at Norris Motor Group, Windsor Qld

Get somebody to push on the bonnet whilst you are trying to pull lever. This should do the trick then lubricate all moving parts of the catch mechanism.
Could be in the trany sensor/gear or the speedo itself
Scenics suffered from leaking sunroof which damaged the reicever for the C/L and immob in the interior mirror. Chech to make sure its not full of water. Apart from that you are stuck with a very poor quality immobilizer from Renault. If its any conselation, there are loads of Renault drivers in same position. Hope this helps.
