It depends on the style of timing cover you have. The older style mounts from the inside and has a lip to rest against in the hole. The newer cover has a larger outer hole for a flange style seal that goes in from the front or outside. The seal has a 3/8 inch flange on the seal that rests against the outside of the cover.
