Before BC ferries, a privately owned ferry company called Black Ball ferries operated in and out of Horseshoe Bay. They had control of the routes to Gibsons and Nanaimo, starting from 1951. In fact, they built the first terminal at Horseshoe Bay. Before this, there really wasn't a lot of travel between the mainland and vancouver island, it was mainly just for industrial purposes.
The airport is about 12km due south of Vancouver. The most efficient way to get to the airport is the use of the Skytrain which will have you downtown in about 20 minutes.
