One way to reset your Mac's System Preferences is rather short, but needs to be done carefully, as we need to delete a file from your hard drive.
Firstly, open up the harddrive icon on your desktop (or from a new finder window you can choose your hard-drive name from the Devices listed on the left).
Next, open up the Users folder, and then your username on your mac (or click on the name of your user from under Places listed on the left).
Now open the Library folder. Then open Preferences. And you are in the correct place!
Finally, scroll down the list to find the file named exactly com.apple.systempreferences.plist
and after triple-checking the name to be exact, delete it. Because Apple does not want people accidently deleting files while trying to change the filename, they made the file deletion keypress different from pressing just a simple Delete key. Click once on that file to highlight it. Triple check to make sure it is the correct filename. Press the Command Key (the clover key) and holding it down like you would hold down the shift key, press the delete keyto delete the highlighted file.
Your mac has now forgotten all your mixed up system preference settings, and you will be starting them over from system defaults. Yay!
