Take the S shuttle train (color code grey), or the Downtown 7 train (the purple line) if the shuttle isn't running, from 42nd Street-Grand Central Station to 42nd Street-Times Square.
Then walk through the tunnel that connects the 42nd Street-Times Square station to the 42nd Street-Port Authority Bus Terminal station. Take the Uptown C train (of the A-C-E, the blue line), 3 stops, from 42nd Street-Port Authority to 72nd Street (at Central Park West).
At 72nd Street there is an entrance to the Park Drive (a 6-mile loop around the park for vehicles). Start walking on the Park Drive (keep to the far left lane to avoid being run over by cars, cyclists and rollerbladers). The Park Drive is closed to vehicles on weekends and during midday on weekdays (as far as I recall, anyway), but there are always cyclists and rollerbladers, and some of them go very fast.
When you get to the 3-way intersection, take a left (heading east instead of south). Then you'll come to a fork in the road. Take a right (heading east instead of north) and keep walking until you reach the fountain and plaza at the south end of the Lake. It'll be to your left, with a staircase leading down. To your right is the Literary Walk. To the right, and just up ahead, is the bandshell.
