You're not saying what kind of pain it is - emotional or physical - but the answer is to SEE A PSYCHIATRIST and/or your regular doctor. DO NOT be fooled into thinking things like you have no worth, or things would be better if you were not around. You are smart enough to know that you were put in this world for a purpose. Your pain also serves a purpose. It is a warning signal that something is very wrong. The doctor can help you discover what it is.
There are many ways to build pain tolerance, but the best way I know (and got into) is Martial Arts. Martial Arts, depending on the style, teaches you mental control as you harden your body over time, as well as develop flexibility in your body, which again helps to control pain.
For example, Karate dojo's use a Makiwara board, essentially just a board with a heavy canvas covered pad. It' used to toughen the hand, knuckles and wrist by hitting it continually while focusing mentally. Other methods are plunging the hands into heated rock of differing sizes (starting with sand, then small pebbles, larger stones and then rocks). The idea and goal is the gradual and incremental toughening of the mind, body and spirit over time. Studying for and getting my Black Belt kept me from surgery for an additional 5 years, and the mental control I learned helps me even today.
The key element here is mental focus. I have lived with Pain for the last 20 years, severe pain every day for the past 9. There are days when my drugs, the strongest available, just won't cut it and I need to focus mentally to distract my mind from the pain. I use many different techniques - believe it or not, being a Supervisor here at Wiki Answers is one of them. Another is Video Gaming - it's actually sanctioned therapy for me.
Over time you'll learn to focus on something that keeps your mind focused on something else besides your pain, an after a while it becomes second nature - you won't even notice it. What device you use is up to you, as long as it works.
First, we will have to describe what pain actually is.
Pain is a conscious emotional experience that is generated in the brain and is activated when specialized nerve receptors for noxious stimuli (named nociceptors) fire.
If one is not conscious, one cannot feel pain. That is a given.
Nociceptors can be inhibited by local anaesthesia or activating local interneurons. The activation of interneurons can inhibit nociceptors.
