I had a 2001 GP that did the same thing. If I waited a few minutes, it would eventually turn and come out. There is a switch associated with the transmission that needs to be replaced but I read where it would cost $500+ to fix. Common problem for the earlier GP's.
you dont! it has to be in the off position
To change the ignition lock on a 2002 Pontiac Aztek, start by disconnecting the negative battery cable for safety. Remove the steering column covers and then access the ignition switch by unscrewing it from the column. Use a key to turn the ignition to the "Accessory" position, which will allow you to press the release tab and remove the old lock cylinder. Finally, insert the new ignition lock cylinder, reassemble the steering column covers, and reconnect the battery.
Your ignition lock mechanism is worn/damaged (How much junk do you have on that key ring, Bub?). It needs to be replaced.

In order to remove the ignition switch the lock cylinder has to come out first. Notice the small hole in the front face of the lock cylinder. Insert the ignition key and turn it to the accessory position. Insert a small stiff wire/pin/paperclip into the small hole and push it in. As you are doing that turn the key to the left beyond the accessory position. This will release the lock cylinder. Now pull the lock cylinder straight out. You can now unscrew the chrome bezel that holds the switch assembly into the dash. Pull the assembly out the back and drop it down so you can unplug the wire harness from the switch.
