To set up a connection to xbox live all you need is an ethernet cable. First plug one end of the cable into the back of the xbox in the ethernet port and the other end of the cable into your router or ethernet switch. Or if you have wifi in your house and can't use an ethernet cable you can buy a wireless network adapter and plug it into the back of the xbox following the directions on the package and then set up live on the dashboard.
